LITTLE TRUCKEE MEADOWS WEATHER
November 11, 2020

Although technically open year round, fishing the Little Truckee through the winter has historically been controversial. Half the people say to give this trophy stream a wintertime break, the other half realize that only a few insane people are willing to hike to the water to fish as the road in is not plowed after snowfall. You’ll catch us out there at times, those big fish have to eat all winter and you won’t find the same solitude on the LT in the summer, just be extremely careful to not get yourself stuck in the snow…it’s a long, dark, and cold hike out if you do. The wintertime BWO and PMD hatches can be amazing, and dry fly fishing can be absolutely spectacular. Just maybe pack some extra water and a few extra layers before you venture back there.

Strategy

Guide Tips: You'll need all the tools in the bag to have a successful day on the Little Truckee. Tight line nymphing is the best way to get flies in front of fish for a quick grab, but always watch for rising fish throughout the day.

Info

The Little Truckee river between Stampede and Boca reservoirs is a highly accessible watershed with numerous established trails to different parts of the river. While difficult to access during the winter, trails are obvious once the snow melts and nearly every part of the river can be fished. Please avoid this fishery at flows under 60 CFS as water temps tend to rise to dangerous levels for fish.
