River Overview

One of the very first pieces of water to be named a wild and scenic river.

Details

  • Closest Fly Shops: Ace Mountain Hardware, Blairsden, CA
  • River Regulations & Closures: Open the last Saturday in April until November 15th. Artificial, barbless hooks only.

Fishing on the Middle Feather is still incredible, but with more warm days on the horizon it’s time to start taking water temperatures and focusing on the feeder creek inflows where cold water enters the system. Caddis are still high on the menu right now, so a Fox’s Poopah or a birds nest will get the most action, but general attractor nymphs and midges are always safe bets. Switch to a hopper dropper or stimulator dropper rig mid day when the sun is high and all else fails.

Wading

Wading the Middle Feather river is simple in some places, and dangerous in others. Moving through remote portions of Plumas County, the Middle Feather is calm in some sections and then tumbles through boulders and rocky canyons in others. This is true adventure fishing where a wading staff and supportive boots make all the difference.

Strategy

Guide Tips: Look for sunny spots on the river mid-day, trout will be holding in the warmer sections of the river and feeding until dark.
