River Overview

The North Feather River is an intimidating fishery. While highly visible from Highway 70, access down to the water can be difficult and finding spots to cast can be challenging.

Details

  • Target Species: Rainbow Trout

  • River Regulations & Closures: Open year round from Cresta Powerhouse downstream. Above Cresta is open last Saturday in April through November 15th.
  • Hazards: Difficult access and wading in numerous areas. Poison oak is common. Flows can change quickly. Use caution, large boulders compose most of the river bottom and depth can be very deceiving.

Strategy

Guide Tips: Lots of flies are lost on the bottom here, a small tippet ring will help save your leader if you do snag the rocks and break your flies off.

Wading Info

Wading the North Feather River can be highly challenging in certain areas, and downright dangerous in others. The riverbottom is composed mainly of large boulders, and wading off the edge of one of these and into fast water can happen. Move slowly, always use a wading staff and do not wade outside of your comfort zone.
